Compass-Point Healthcare Achieves Landmark Milestone with 30,000th Patient Served While Expanding Telehealth Services to Rural Communities
Healthcare leader celebrates patient milestone while launching innovative telehealth expansion program to improve access for underserved rural populations across central Illinois
SPRINGFIELD, IL – March 26, 2026 – Compass-Point Healthcare announced today that it has reached a significant milestone by serving its 30,000th patient since the practice was founded in 2011. To commemorate this achievement and further its mission of providing accessible healthcare, the organization simultaneously launched its Rural Health Connect program, an innovative telehealth initiative designed to bring specialist care to underserved rural communities across central Illinois.
The milestone patient, Maria Santos of Springfield, was welcomed during a routine wellness appointment with Dr. Sarah Mitchell. Santos, a 42-year-old mother of three, has been a patient at Compass-Point Healthcare for four years and represents the diverse community the practice serves. "Reaching our 30,000th patient is more than just a number – it represents 30,000 individuals and families who have trusted us with their healthcare," said Dr. Mitchell, Chief Medical Officer and co-founder. "This milestone reinforces our commitment to being the healthcare home our community can depend on."
Rural Health Connect Program Launch
The Rural Health Connect program addresses a critical need in central Illinois, where many rural communities face significant barriers to accessing specialty healthcare services. Through state-of-the-art telehealth technology, the program will provide virtual consultations with Compass-Point Healthcare specialists to patients in partner rural clinics and community health centers within a 60-mile radius of Springfield.
"Rural residents often face hour-long drives for specialist appointments, creating real barriers to necessary care," explained Dr. James Rodriguez, co-founder and Internal Medicine specialist. "Our telehealth expansion removes those geographical barriers while maintaining the personal, high-quality care our patients expect."
The program will initially focus on cardiology, endocrinology, and orthopedic consultations, with plans to expand to additional specialties based on community needs. Local partner clinics will provide the physical examination space and basic diagnostic equipment, while Compass-Point Healthcare specialists conduct comprehensive consultations via secure video conferencing technology.
Technology and Infrastructure Investment
Compass-Point Healthcare has invested $400,000 in advanced telehealth infrastructure to support the Rural Health Connect program. The investment includes high-definition video conferencing systems, specialized diagnostic equipment that can be operated remotely, and secure cloud-based platforms that ensure patient privacy and HIPAA compliance.
- Remote Diagnostic Capabilities: Digital stethoscopes, dermascopes, and otoscopes that transmit real-time data to specialists
- Secure Platform Integration: HIPAA-compliant video conferencing with encrypted data transmission
- Electronic Health Records Connectivity: Seamless integration with partner clinic record systems
- Mobile Health Units: Portable telehealth equipment for even more remote locations
- 24/7 Technical Support: Dedicated support team to ensure uninterrupted service delivery
"The technology allows us to provide the same level of detailed consultation we would offer in person," said Dr. Michael Thompson, cardiologist and Medical Technology Director. "Patients receive comprehensive care without the burden of extensive travel, and local providers maintain their crucial role in ongoing patient management."
Community Partnership and Impact
The Rural Health Connect program has formed partnerships with eight rural clinics and community health centers in Sangamon, Menard, Morgan, and Christian counties. These partnerships were developed in consultation with local healthcare leaders and the Illinois Rural Health Association to ensure the program addresses the most pressing needs in these communities.
"Access to specialist care has been a longstanding challenge for our rural patients," said Nancy Williams, Administrator at Pleasant Plains Family Medicine, one of the partner clinics. "This program means our patients can receive expert consultations without taking entire days off work or arranging complex transportation. It's truly transformative for our community."
The program is expected to serve approximately 500 rural patients in its first year, with projected growth to 1,200 patients annually by the end of 2027. Initial focus areas include diabetes management, cardiovascular risk assessment, and orthopedic injury evaluation – conditions that represent the highest demand in partner communities.
Reflecting on 15 Years of Growth
Since its founding in 2011 with just two physicians and a staff of five, Compass-Point Healthcare has grown to include 12 healthcare providers and more than 30 support staff members. The practice has expanded from a single location to include two clinic sites and now the virtual presence through telehealth services.
"When Dr. Rodriguez and I founded Compass-Point Healthcare, our vision was to create a healthcare home that could grow and adapt to meet our community's evolving needs," reflected Dr. Mitchell. "Serving 30,000 patients and launching innovative programs like Rural Health Connect shows how that vision continues to guide our work."
The practice has maintained a 98% patient satisfaction rating throughout its growth, with particular recognition for communication quality, care coordination, and accessibility. Recent patient surveys identified telehealth services as a top priority, helping inform the development of the Rural Health Connect program.
Future Expansion Plans
Building on the success of the Rural Health Connect program, Compass-Point Healthcare plans to expand telehealth services to include mental health counseling, nutritional consultations, and chronic disease management programs. The organization is also exploring partnerships with regional hospitals to provide remote consultation for emergency departments in rural areas.
"Our goal is to ensure that every resident of central Illinois has access to comprehensive, high-quality healthcare regardless of where they live," said Jennifer Walsh, Practice Administrator. "The Rural Health Connect program is just the beginning of how we plan to use technology and partnerships to eliminate healthcare access barriers."
